DIRECTORS STATEMENT

We were absolute lunatics when we began Dead Enders. Our twenties were ending with the pandemic lockdowns. It had been almost two years since any of us left our house, let alone made a movie. We had two years of introspection and pent-up creative energy. On top of that we were directing as a duo - a tough challenge of negotiation for a Buckee’s loving son of South Texas and a WaWa-worshiping Yankee from Pennsylvania.


Tensions were high in the writer’s room and in America.

State and federal officials were telling unvaccinated minimum wage workers to stay at their jobs for the betterment of the stock market and their ability to get a cheap late night snack. Economists were calling people’s refusal to do so “the great resignation.” A million people died and we were talking about cryptocurrency. To adapt a phrase from Sly Stone, there were more than a few riots going on.

We wanted to make a riot ourselves - we were shut in for too long. We sublimated everything into this maximalist blast of genre and pop. We wanted to make a film in the most existential of genres that asks “at what point do you finally quit a life of complacency and try to do more?” For us, it was when reality was outclassed by the most dystopian of sci-fi. For the heroine of our film, it's when the world gets overtaken by mind controlling bugs.
